Virtual Library of Veterinary Medicine and General Parasitology - Outline of Project

The library of the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover holds the German Research Society’s Special Collection 22, Veterinary Medicine, General Parasitology and in this function is responsible for the provision of literature. This important task of science-and informationpolitical relevance shall be a augmented by electronic documents In the project applied for there shall be developed cooperation between those

  • Learned Societies
  • Information Centers
  • Publishers
  • Libraries
of relevance for veterinary medicine and general parasitology which are making efforts in the direction of 
  • Indexing
  • Retrieving
  • Providing
  • Archiving
electronic information and documents and offering an integrated package with. conventional documents. 

The library maintains a homepage at:

with links to our own subpages and others on the Internet. These links and those to be added will have to be categorized. Here our "elib" (electronic library) and online-contents will be kept. Besides these there will be links to

  • An information-system of veterinary medicine and general parasitology with an overview of its subdivisions and the existing information tools therein (bibliographical databases, subject based dictionaries, texts, topical servers etc.) with direct access

  • The integrated subject oriented search in bibliographical databases with access to documents and subjectbased internet search engines.

  •  
  • The direct search in general bibliographical holdings-systems (online catalogs, online-contents databases etc.)

  •  
  • Access to gateways in the veterinary and biomedical sector – cooperation with VETGATE and NOVAgate 
Based upon these profile- and alertservices are intended for a later date.

Cooperations exist or are intended with the following institutions amongst others:  Deutsches Agrarinformationsnetz; NOVAgate; BIOME (here: Vetgate); Veterinary Medicine Library of Virginia Polytechnic Insitute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia; Veterinary Medicine Library University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois; Bibliotheque de Medicine Veterinaire de L'Université de Montreal; Flower-Sprecher Library, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; International Veterinary Information Service, Ithaca, New York; NETVET, Washington, University, St. Louis, Missouri

Freely available link collections on the internet will be screened, but inclusion will be subject to evaluation criteria such as

The establishment of cooperations will be a major task in itself because of the technical diversity and the differences in stage of development plus possible policy restrictions.
