A REPORT OF THE 1ST CONFERENCE OF AFRICAN ANIMAL HEALTH INFORMATION WORKERS.

ONDERSTEPOORT, SOUTH AFRICA, 3-6 July, 1995

By Erica van der Westhuizen

The Veterinary Science Library of the University of Pretoria, organised the 1st Conference of African Animal Health information Workers, which was held at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort, 3-6 July, 1995.

Not only veterinary librarians from Africa attended, but we were very pleased to have four colleagues from the USA, as well as Dr David Lister from CABI head office. The African countries represented were Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and, of course, South Africa.

The programme was very full, with morning presentation sessions, followed by afternoon visits to libraries, game parks, and breeding stations in the Pretoria region. These included the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, De Wildt Cheetah Breeding Station, and the Irene Animal Production Institute.

The twenty-five papers presented were grouped into the following sections:

A safari banquet at the National Zoo rounded off a most enjoyable and informative conference. Many new friendships were forged and we promised to keep in touch, and hopefully form an African Veterinary Library group in the near future.
